Annie Jackson is an accomplished songwriter and multi-instrumentalist ( Vocals/Saxophone/Keys/Clarinet) and was raised in a musical family, her mother being a pianist/vocalist and her father, a dance band Saxophonist/Clarinetist.
Annie began playing piano at the age of 8, Clarinet at 10 and Saxophone at 15. She began singer/songwriting around the age of 12 and had formed her own Ska band by the time she was 16. After scoring in the top 10% in the NSW HSC for music composition where she wrote a piece for a 15 piece Stage Band aptly named “Sweat “she was accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studied Saxophone.
While at Sydney Conservatorium she played with Paul Mac’s first band “Smash Mac Mac” while also teaching and conducting school bands in order to bring in an income. She also played in many professional productions including “Grease “ at the Enmore Theatre.
By the age of 20 Annie was now working fulltime as a professional musician (Saxophone/Keys/Vocals) playing 3 gigs a week in Sydneys top cover/corporate bands as well as session work. She had written over 50 songs, toured New Zealand and Norfolk Island, had her first T.V performance where she performed to John Paul Young who referred to her as “Wilbur Wilde in a dress”and still had a desperate wish to focus on her originals. In 1995 she wrote a rock musical "Asylum" for Manly council and then proceeded to team up with Sydney producer Wayne Miller and record her 1st EP “ Memoirs of a Suburban Girl” Unfortunately this EP was never released however it is now currently available on iTunes and “Outlaws” one of the songs on this EP received a top 10 rating in the Australian Song Writing competition in 1996.
Annie earned her reputation as one of Sydney’s powerhouse vocalists and only female Funk Sax players. She had played and toured throughout Australia and internationally with a variety of cover and original bands. She had also performed at all the great Sydney venues including the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney Opera House, ANZ stadium (Brisbane) Darling Harbour and the Sydney Olympics, in the presence of Prince Charles and in front of audiences numbering up to 400,000. This continued until 2005 when Annie moved up to the Sunshine Coast where she took up residency at a variety of Schools teaching Saxophone and Clarinet and creating unique award winning ensembles.
By 2013 she felt the need to re-enter the professional performing musician world again and since then has not looked back. She teamed up with the well known “ Sunny Coast Rude Boys” and Toni Zaffa’s “Funkzilla” playing Saxophone and Back up vocals and created Annie J & Fusion, her own unique original band that encompasses a variety of genres including Blues, Ska, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Rock, Reggae and R&B. In this band Annie writes and arranges every song, lick, horn line and writes all the lyrics. She is the lead vocalist, keyboard player and of course Saxophone player as well. She has self managed and booked this band herself since inception.
Annie has self funded and released 3 EP's "DIVERSITY " (2015), "I'M BACK " (2014) and "SUBURBAN CABAGE" (2018) with Annie J & Fusion as well as a solo EP "MEMOIRS OF A SUBURBAN GIRL" (1997) all of which are available on iTunes. They are currently receiving airplay in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and Japan. Every song speaks from the heart and encompasses mind, body and soul. She uses worldwide themes and embraces real life issues into her music.
