QUOTES:

"a four-piece force of hazy, punk-laced rock’n’roll fury"

"Savage and sexy."
– Transgenre

"The band delivered a set that was equal parts brain and brawn—politically charged, musically tight, and emotionally seismic. Led by the magnetic Kate Farquharson, Second Idol are a band at the height of their powers, dishing out cerebral noise and feedback-drenched catharsis."
– Backseat Mafia (live review)

"Drums roll like distant thunder across scorched plains, guitars scream with salt and steel, while Kate Farquharson: vocalist, lyricist, and firebrand, bares her teeth and soul. Born of Sri Lankan and Scottish blood, raised under wide country skies in New South Wales, she spits the struggle of straddling empires, of calling colonised land “home” with a tongue tied in history’s knots."
– Post-punk.com (on Postcolonial Blues)

"The band explodes with raw honesty, exposed nerves, and the kind of grit that makes diamonds look soft."
– Post-punk.com

"The quartet thrive with their potent new release, with the compelling lyricism and lush instrumentation of Boxing Ring ultimately emerging as a knockout winner."
– TheSoundcheck.com.au

“Dear X” meshes vigour with kinetic force, via their trademark ominous guitars and resolute drums, as Olivia’s anthemic vocals emulate alt-rock sirens Siouxsie Sioux, Aimee Mann, and PJ Harvey."
–  Post-punk.com (on Dear X)

“Charged bursts of captivating alt-rock-meets-punk-pop that sits in line with long-time influences from Sonic Youth and Savages, two acts whose everlasting imprint is still felt in alt-rock.”
– Pilerats (on White Noise)

“Teeth bared, Second Idol standing up with some fire in the belly here.”
– Dave Ruby Howe (Triple J) on White Noise

“'Defence Mechanisms', the powerful EP by Sydney band Second Idol, is a solid guitar-driven indie rock'n'roll gem filled with memorable riffs, a hard unapologetic rough hewn edge and scintillating melodies that reach for the sky.”
– Backseat Mafia

“Earnest lyric writing and skilled instrumentation at centre stage to elevate the song to soaring heights.”
– Post-Punk.com (on Dear X)

“There's something about this that makes me want to just push that little bit harder against the patriarchy.”
– Bridie Tanner (Triple J) on White Noise

“Really into that surging guitar in the back. It's got an edgy, 90's feel and badass energy.”
– Claire Mooney (Triple J) on White Noise

“a big 5 minutes of slow burning, moody goodness!"
– Declan Byrne (Triple J) on Out Of Time

Extended Biography:

Kate was raised in a cross-cultural household in the rural town of Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of NSW, to first-generation Australian parents of Sri Lankan and Scottish heritage. She began the band under the name Bruise Pristine in 2016, releasing her debut EP Not Like You in 2017. She succeeded with support from community radio 2SER and FBi, and supported artists Harry Howard and the NDE, Teenage Joans, Battlesnake, Horror My Friend, and Crywank (UK).

The arrival of Covid in 2020 resulted in a shake-up to Kate’s vision of the band, resulting in a new name and evolution into Second Idol.

Second Idol released their debut single White Noise in early 2021, and EP Defence Mechanisms in May 2021 to critical acclaim. Press pick-up included Pilerats, NME, Music Feeds, rotation on Rage, Double J, Triple J, and support from community radio nationwide (2SER, 3RRR, PBS, 4ZZZ, RTRFM and Radio Adelaide). In 2021-2022 the band hit new heights supporting renowned Australian artists Wolf & Cub and Jen Cloher, and Baxter Dury (UK) at Vivid Sydney 2022.

In 2022, the band released Dear X, an evocative and emotionally searing single. Dear X was added to rotation on 2SER, MTV Upload, and selected for The Guardian Australia’s Best New Music Spotify playlist. Community radio highlights included spins on FBi Radio, PBS, 3RRR, 4ZZZ, RTRFM and Radio Adelaide, plus UK online radio Aspen Waite and Frontiere rock French radio.

2023 was a year of personal development and honing creativity with frontwoman Kate selected for the AIR’s Women in Music Mentorship Program and mentored by Cara WIlliams (Private Function, Gut Health). In 2023, Kate also established Manifesto - a feminist zine and initiative that champions women, non-binary and trans musicians and creatives.

The second half of the year saw the band return to the studio to record their debut album Mongrel at The Brain Studios, Sydney with Clayton Segelov (Shady Nasty, Dear Seattle). An album that explores notions of identity and belonging, Mongrel stands as a response to an age of isolation and polarisation and investigates concepts of feminism, gender, postcolonialism, imposter syndrome, self-esteem and heartbreak. Mongrel is slated for independent release in 2025.

On 8 March 2024, Second Idol released the single Boxing Ring a song that lays out the experience of being a woman in the music industry. The title refers to the continual fight that non-cis men face in the industry, that women, non-binary and trans musicians are often placed on a pedestal, novelised, often not taken seriously, pitted against each other, and cut down.

In 2025, single Postcolonial Blues (2025), a rumination on cross-cultural and Australian identity, saw them support Irish band The Murder Capital on their debut Australian tour, and vocalist Kate Farquharson publish an op-ed piece in TheMusic.com.au. Off the back of the release, the band launched a crowdfunding campaign and successfully raised $4,000 to press their debut album Mongrel on 12" vinyl.

October 2025 marks the band's release of the single Spineless Wonders, in anticipation of their debut album Mongrel. Spineless Wonders has already experienced success with the music video directed by Jack Fontes screening on Rage ABC TV.
