Long Bio;
Butterflywingtip’s origins go back to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 2010. Katherine Stares and Steve Bick were working together on Steve’s solo project, and realized they had a shared love of Electronic Music. On their way to play rock and roll shows they would listen to Burial, Jai Paul, and Jamie XX. They decided to create a project that would let them flex their eclectic taste in music.
Steve had a surplus of songs that didn’t really fit his solo project, so he and Kathy got to work building Butterflywingtip recordings. The project moved to Toronto, where it floundered in the high-rent workaday lifestyle. The duo shuffled between work spaces due to noise complaints and ‘coked out’ room-mates. They released one EP, Wolf Piece, which only reached a handful of ears scattered across the internet.
Butterflywingtip began to admit that Toronto wasn’t really their kind of weird. In a wild gambit, the duo packed their studio and their dog/mascot Scully, and moved to Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. The duo gigged around Puerto Vallarta, playing bars and restaurants for drunk tourists. Six months and their VISAs flew by and the duo relocated again, to Tofino, British Columbia, Canada’s surf capitol.
In Tofino, Butterflywingtip lived at a geothermal hot-springs and started organizing live music events in town. There hadn’t been a concert in Tofino for a long time, and BFWT stirred up a local scene. Soon, monthly shows were sold out, and BFWT began touring the lower mainland and Vancouver Island.
After a raucous summer of surfy dance parties, BFWT toured across Canada, south through the USA, and down to sunny old Mexico. They wound up in another surf hotspot, Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. In a baby-blue casita, they created their second EP, Birth Weight. Their work was featured in now-defunct blog ‘Silent Shout’, Ride The Tempo, and charted on College Radio in BC.
When the VISAs were up, Kathy and Steve moved back to Tofino, creating their third EP ‘Imitating Art’ , and their mixtape ‘Luxurious Pet’.
