ABOUT

CHEAP-SKATE is the solo garage-rock project of Gippsland artist Blaike Murphy.

Built from a garage studio in regional Victoria, CHEAP-SKATE has become known for combining relentless output with unconventional ideas and a fiercely independent approach to building an audience.

In 2026, Murphy launched CHEAP-YEAR — an ambitious challenge to release new music every week for an entire year. Songs, EPs, collaborations and experiments are all written, recorded, mixed and mastered independently, creating an ongoing body of work that continues to grow week by week.

The project has gained attention not only for its output, but for the way it operates. DIY CD runs, self-booked national tours, community-driven events, creative marketing campaigns and a unique “band-in-each-state” model have allowed CHEAP-SKATE to build a genuine grassroots following across Australia.

What began as a regional garage-punk project has evolved into a national touring act with dedicated live bands in multiple states, growing interstate audiences, and supporters reaching far beyond Australia through music and merchandise sales.

Recent touring has seen particularly strong growth in Queensland, where audience demand has begun rivaling traditional home-state markets and helped establish CHEAP-SKATE as one of the country’s most active independent rock projects.

Since forming in 2022, CHEAP-SKATE has shared stages with Hockey Dad, Dune Rats, WAAX, The Smith Street Band, Gyroscope, Rum Jungle, The Reytons and The Bennies, while continuing to grow entirely independently.
