"Cut back" is a three-and-a-half-minute burst of country-tinged indie rock— and the first taste of Lady Lyon’s debut album, arriving in June.
The “Cut back” bop belies an introspective and, at times, defiant conversation between past and present selves. It's a reckoning with identity and change: some things never leave you, life is messy, “it’s hard and it’s easy…but it’s all that way.” The future is uncertain, but looking back—cutting back—reveals what you’re made of.
Slotted in as track two on the album, "Cut Back" was produced by Wade Keighran (dust, Polish Club) and recorded at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville as 2024 ticked over into 2025.
The forthcoming 12-track LP will be at home on shelves alongside artists like Angel Olsen, Julia Jacklin, Adrianne Lenker, Wednesday, Neko Case and Sharon Van Etten.
"Cut back 'refers to a kind of ‘sliding doors’ moment in time. I found myself pushing through a lot of personal self doubt last year when writing this album....'Cut back' is the stubborn need to do what you love and the reflection on what you can actually achieve when you give it everything you’ve got."
- Hayley Lyon
Lady Lyon launched “Cut back” (and debuted a few more tracks from the album live) on 29 March at Petersham Bowling Club as part of Great Southern Nights.
5 STARS "There's something so familiar about this track, like it's been plucked straight out of the great Australian songbook, a harking back to a bygone era yet something so new and intriguing. What a triumph LL."
- ABC Country Music Director Kath Devaney
As heard on: Triple J's Home and Hosed, 2ser, 4ZZZ & more.
"Cut back" will be followed by "
