Doug Loch: The Architect of Melody and Momentum
Born into a family of church organists, for Doug Loch the dancefloor has always been the place of worship. From his formative years as a classically trained pianist and guitarist, he found his tribe at Manchester’s legendary Haçienda in 1986, and from then on his approach to music became defined by the intersection of rigorous musicality and the raw, communal energy of club culture.
After a distinguished 30-year career as an international finance lawyer, a 2023 redundancy provided more than just an opportunity to recommit — it offered a homecoming. Returning to the studio with the same precision he applied to the law, Doug emerged as a "musician’s producer and DJ", blending the sophisticated structures of classical composition with the driving pulses of deep, organic and progressive house and breaks.
The Philosophy: Equal Emphasis
Doug’s musical mantra is simple: equal emphasis on melody and rhythm. He rejects formulaic trends, deploying age old musical techniques such as syncopation, harmonic shifts and the emotive tension of switching between major and minor keys, in a modern electronic context. The result is a sound that feels deeply rooted in the heritage of dance music, and which is as captivating as it is original. He makes music to be felt, creating moments that are immersive and meaningful, where the dancefloor becomes a shared experience of progression, tension and release, and music that sounds equally good back home.
People Like Us: A Community of Sound
In 2023 Doug founded People Like Us, a dual-threat record label and party series designed for the original ravers — a community of like-minded music lovers who grew up with club and festival culture and still demand depth from their nights out. What began as a platform for his own productions has evolved into a sanctuary for Sydney’s underground, with community-oriented parties featuring live vocal performances and showcasing his equal emphasis musical mantra.
Momentum & Global Support
Doug’s return to the studio and booth has been met with impressive industry recognition, with a variety of standout moments across 2025. His track "Dark Storm" was remixed by esteemed Melbourne producer Danny Bonnici, and earned the ultimate progressive seal of approval when it was championed by Hernan Cattaneo, whereas his People Like Us brand supported Claptone at a recent Sydney gig . With a monthly residency on the UK’s Data Transmission Radio and standout performances at Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and the UK's Give festival, Doug is rapidly expanding his footprint from Sydney to the global stage.
As he moves through 2026, Doug is focused on gaining third party label support and the evolution of his hybrid live-DJ sets, bringing his multi-instrumental background directly into the booth.
Whether improvising over an extended transition or composing in the studio, Doug Loch remains dedicated to one goal: purveying modern dance music that is original, evocative, and undeniably musical.
