Gretta Ziller is an Australian singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist working across Americana, alt country, folk, and roots music. Raised in the Upper Murray region of Victoria in a farming family, her musical life began early. She started violin at age three and later expanded to guitar, piano, banjo, and bagpipes. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne, majoring in voice, and began her professional career in opera before transitioning into contemporary songwriting and performance.
Gretta first attracted national attention in 2011 at the CMAA College of Country Music graduation concert, where she performed on the bagpipes, immediately setting herself apart as an artist with a distinctive voice and vision. She went on to build momentum through a series of major industry milestones, including finalist placements in Telstra Road to Discovery in 2012 and 2013, winning the 2013 TSA APRA New Songwriter of the Year award, receiving an honourable mention in the Unsigned Only Songwriting Competition, and placing top three in Toyota Star Maker in 2015.
Her debut EP Hell’s Half Acre was released in 2014 and established her reputation for strong narrative songwriting and genre fluidity. Her debut album Queen of Boomtown followed, blending country, blues, rock, and folk influences. The album earned a Golden Guitar Award nomination for Alt Country Album of the Year, a CMC Music Award nomination, and was longlisted for the Australian Music Prize. The single Slaughterhouse Blues also received international songwriting recognition.
Her second album Judas Tree expanded her sound and lyrical scope, exploring themes of resilience, power, and identity. The record again appeared on the Australian Music Prize long list and reinforced her standing as an artist willing to take creative risks.
In 2023, Gretta released her third studio album All These Walls, a reflective and self assured body of work centred on self belief, emotional boundaries, and growth. That same year, she was named the first recipient of the Country Music Association of Australia Academy of Music Scholarship, which took her to Nashville and included an official showcase at AmericanaFest.
In 2024, she marked a decade of recorded releases with The Miles, an anniversary album revisiting key songs from across her catalogue. She also completed The Long and Writing Road, a self directed project involving 52 co writes in 52 weeks. This project now forms the foundation of her current album cycle, with new music rolling out across 2025 and 2026 leading into a full length release.
Now based in Melbourne, Gretta Ziller tours nationally, performs solo and with full band, and remains fully independent and self managed. Her work is grounded in craft, connection, and storytelling, delivered with clarity and intention, and continues to resonate with audiences across Australia and internationally.
