Australia is home to the world’s oldest surviving culture. Through millennia, the stories and traditions of the continent’s remarkable First Nations have been kept alive through music and dance. And maintaining that tradition is the driving force behind one of the country’s most powerful traditional dance groups – The Guruman Dancers.
Formerly known as Badjtala Nangarim, the group recently took the Guruman name (meaning kangaroo) and has set about its goal of protecting and revitalizing language and culture through traditional dance. A melting pot of tradition, the group represents several Aboriginal tribal groups - Butchulla, Garawa, Mununjali,Yugambeh, Gungurri, Birri Gubba, Goomeroi and Wiradjuri.
One of Queensland’s most respected dance groups, they have performed at a host of events including: Los Angeles for the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner May 20016. Woodford Folk Festival 2014/15, Brisbane Exhibition 2014/15/16, Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival 2014, NRL Indigenous All Stars Festival, The Brisbane Lord Mayors NAIDOC Celebrations, Clancestry, Australasian Performing Arts Market 2014 and a host of other community and major sporting events.
Guruman is committed to taking their message to the world with members performing both nationally and internationally having performed across the globe in Denmark, The United States, Canada, Korea and Russia with numerous other international tours in place for the next 12 months.
More than simply a dance group, Guruman offers everything from large scale cultural event management and workshops to corporate performances and choreography.
