Cairns troubadour Jelly Oshen has been dropping a steady stream of R&B flavoured bedroom-pop singles since his debut in 2019 clocking up 350k+ Spotify streams so far.
Oshen’s latest single ‘Good Days’ is another taste of Jelly’s trademark “ultra chill goodness” (Declan Byrne, Triple J Unearthed review). Jelly is working on his forthcoming debut album and also on a live EP.
A lyricist by the age of 8, and a multi-instrumentalist by the age 12, Jelly Oshen (pronounced ‘ocean’) found his singer songwriter calling at 14 and has an ocean of material in the bank. Lyrics that stick, his songs transfix, where lo-fi styles meet a production sweet spot. If you want to understand Jelly Oshen think Bruno Mars and Rex Orange County meeting up with Troye Sivan and Frank Ocean… add a little island flava and you get Jelly Oshen.
With PNG/African/Chinese/Ambon-Indo and Russian blood flowing through his veins Jelly is a multi-cultural cocktail with a vibe that lifts the spirit. Born into a musical family and growing up surrounded by musicians, it makes sense when you see the old soul inside of this pure authentic music baby, his melodies and lyrics invoke the feeling and passion of someone with many more years of seasoning behind them.
Jelly Oshen’s chilled out R&B-tinged indie-pop has been scoring airplay on Triple J & Double J, ABC TV's ‘Rage’ and cool stations around Australia and overseas.
On the live front, Oshen has been hand-picked for some super cool support slots – opening for Tones & I, Vance Joy, Ocean Alley, Katchafire, Ben Lee, Emily Wurramara, Dami Im, Greta Stanley, Caravãna Sun, and Pirra. Jelly was scheduled to appear at Groovin The Moo Festival which was a casualty of covid cancellations. Although Festival Of The Sun in Port Macquarie was postponed a few times we were lucky to see the event go ahead in early 2022 which saw Jelly Oshen along with San Cisco, Hermitude, Middle Kids, Skeggs, Kim Churchill, Ruby Fields. In November Jelly appears at the Rolling Hills Festival in Brisbane with Fat Freddy’s Drop, Katchafire, Drax Project & JessB.
Jelly was selected as a showcase artist at Bigsound 2022 - Australia's leading new music festival and industry conference - amongst the amazing 182 acts on 23 stages in 21 venues over 3 nights in Brisbane/Meanjin's Fortitude Valley 6th-9th September.

“On first impressions, ‘Bordalonely‘ has a very notable Daniel Caesar vibe which instantly sets up expectations of a velvety smooth, love-themed track. Jelly Oshen certainly doesn’t fail to deliver on this front. Tracing the lines of the bass with his deep and understated vocals, the simplicity of the track helps the sentiment of the lyrics sink heavily within you.”

“Bordalonely is a tranquil, sunshine-tinged slice of R&B, led by Oshen's effortless vocals, reverberating guitar strums and airy percussion. The choruses open the song up with warm groove-laden bass and engrossing strings before Oshen flaunts his versatility with his assured rap delivery in the track's second verse.”

"Indie bedroom-pop artist Jelly Oshen continues his rich vein of quality singles with his latest emotive salve, “All Alone”. Jelly has an intoxicating chilled-out R’n’B groove. He has talent and production skills aplenty, showcasing a crazy amount of talent for a twenty-year-old. “All Alone” has a mega chilled-out blissful vibe. It’s a total earworm. The video is good fun, showing an exhausted Jelly dragging his chair up a hill to find just the right spot to enjoy the serenity in his own company. How’s the serenity indeed."

The 20-year-old Australian singer/songwriter just released his latest single, “Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy” and from just one listen it’s clear why he’s been streaming so well. The four-minute indie/R&B track is a complete vibe, carried by Oshen’s pleasant vocals and light electric guitar. “Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy” is an example of a song that is tastefully produced and bound to lift your spirits. “Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy fuses an R&B groove with Jelly’s idiosyncratic sensibilities to create a breezy, accessible contemporary pop track sprinkled with a dash of equally quirky humour. The hook of this track resides not only in its nod to current musical production traits and linguistic stylings but in Jelly’s quite persuasive vocal performance; unhindered and suitably soulful.”

‘‘Cigarettes’ is his latest release, and it is a song full of upbeat indie-pop deliciousness. This song was penned by Jelly at the tender age of 16, about how having a greedy lifestyle with no real consequences can cause deep pain inside. “When you smile more and more you die a little more inside” – speaks of the concept that like cigarettes, greed is addictive and can be just as damaging.
‘Cigarettes’ was produced by Stephen “DubKlaat” Maxwell & mixed by Tommy-John Herbert, who helped him bring his 16-year-old ‘head in the clouds’ dream to life.”

“Raw and intimate yet utilising contemporary, inventive production techniques Cigarettes harnesses a powerful blend of personal observation and alluring narrative to reflect a remarkably fluent exploration of self. Incorporating lo-fi characteristics with fine playing, performances which are contribute to the vibrancy of the track, this varied sonic palette is further enhanced by Jelly’s compelling vocal delivery; nuanced, emotionally charged and effortlessly persuasive. As well as containing a laid-back soulful groove, the instrumentation’s efficacy also owes a little to the tastefully refined and restrained guitar work sprinkled throughout the track. The intimacy revealed in the song, threaded through the lyric, the performance, is underscored by the salient choices revealed in the production. With a melodic sensibility that is indelibly accessible, refreshing, and cohesive, Cigarettes reaffirms the startling vitality and ascending trajectory of this new indie artist, whose forthcoming debut album is due out soon”

“The first thing you'll notice about Jelly Oshen is that he's got a natural talent for making music. Every note you hear him hit is something he figured out for himself, learning to sing and play instruments by ear. The second thing you'll notice is how thoughtful he is. This is the kind of kid who'll tease his sister for looking like Rhianna, even though he knows it's a massive compliment. The stories he weaves into his music are deeply personal, but he keeps the references vague, leaving space for you to bring your own meaning.”

“The result is a song that feels like laying back in a swaying hammock with the afternoon sun on your face. His vocals exude a welcoming richness that is exactly what you need to hear at the end of a long day you’d rather forget.”
