Combining 70s folk influences with a contemporary Americana/bluegrass sound, John Flanagan has drawn comparisons to James Taylor and Paul Kelly and proven himself to be “one of Australia’s finest lyricists” (Timber and Steel). He plays alongside festival favourite Liz Frencham and bluegrass virtuoso Dan Watkins in a dynamic trio characterised by warm vocal harmonies and impressive arrangements. Together they deliver an energetic live set that can vary from humorous and uplifting to moving and thoughtful.

Fast becoming a favourite on the Australian Folk Festival circuit the John Flanagan Trio manages to transcend the sum of its impressive parts. Award winning songwriter, John Flanagan has been compared to James Taylor and Paul Kelly for his warm vocal delivery and engaging storytelling “one of Australia’s finest lyricists” -Timber and Steel; Liz Frencham has a remarkable stage presence and a creativity in her double bass playing which has seen her play alongside artists of international renown; Dan Watkins is recognised as one of the finest young bluegrass pickers in the country on guitar and mandolin and has toured extensively around Australia and the US. Together they combine 70s folk singer-songwriter influences with a range of contemporary Americana styles, from bluegrass and country to blues and folk.  In 2018 they released ‘Honest Man’, Flanagan’s 3rd album and his first time recording with his regular Trio band mates. The album has received high praise from critics around the world.

Flanagan made his mark on the Australian musical landscape when he released There’s Another Way to Where You’re Going in Feb 2016. Recorded in Nashville with producer Viktor Krauss the album was nominated for best Folk/Roots Album in the Age Music Victoria Awards, was featured on ‘album of the week’ lists for ABC and community radio and has been a radio favourite around the country.
