Kaurna/Adelaide queer pop-punk angels
Left On Seen are back and ready to wreak havoc with their second offering for 2024 – and the latest taste of their upcoming debut EP, Wilted – an emotively charged breakup anthem called ‘Burned Out’ (featuring
Rhys de Burgh of
SoSo).
Following the July release of the EP’s explosive (and saucy) lead single, ‘Goosebumps’, Left On Seen take listeners on a bit of a different journey for their next taste of Wilted. Channelling the scene-defining “emo” sides of bands like
blink-182,
The Get Up Kids and
Taking Back Sunday, ‘Burned Out’ puts a modern – and tastefully mature – spin on the classic formula for a hard-hitting breakup song: it’s intimate and raw, but rejects any notion of pity.
“It’s a breakup song about a relationship that went too far past its expiration date,”
Will Adam (guitars) says of the release, adding that ‘Burned Out’ also follows the aftermath of that breakup, when the protagonist is “learning to grow and feel alive again after living in the shadow of that person”.
Injecting the track with some extra flair is the ever-enthralling
Rhys de Burgh, lead vocalist of Gadigal/Sydney pop-punk quintet
SoSo (who zealously describe themselves as “offensively average”, despite being one of the best bands in the game). Adam says of his involvement: “We were pretty hands-off. We sent him a rough demo of what we wanted, and he took our lyrics and changed them up to make it his own. He really made the song feel complete.”
Left On Seen and SoSo go waaaaaay back, as
Ashlea Jaye (vocals) explains: “SoSo played our second ever gig as Left On Seen, which was also our first show as a three-piece. SoSo also headlined our first mini-festival,
No Quiet Fest, and crashed at our houses. SoSo have been huge supporters of Left On Seen since day one, adding our first two releases, ‘Life Support’ and ‘Kill Bill’, to their Offensively Average Productions playlists (with 2,000-9,000 saves). We wanted to highlight them and their support towards us, and show our fans and the industry a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to artists and bands supporting one another. We jumped at the chance to work with them when we decided to have a feature on this song.”
‘Burned Out’ was written by Adam and local rapper
Benedict Gilet – who also worked with Left On Seen on their debut single, ‘Life Support’, in 2022 – with Adam co-producing alongside
Rohan Jurkowski at
Header Studios (where the track was mixed and mastered by Jurkowski). Drums on the track were performed by former Left On Seen member
Tom Allevi, recorded at
Interim Studios with engineer
Jack Hartley.
Left On Seen will launch ‘Burned Out’ with their final headline show of 2024, an ultra-special gig at
The Crown And Anchor Hotel locked in for
Thursday October 10th. It’ll be free to attend, with support coming from hyperpop up-and-comer
Killed By Cupid, acoustic singer-songwriter
James Pots and indie newcomers
Moxie.
Just shy of a month later, Left On Seen will perform at this year’s stacked edition of
Froth & Fury, sharing the stage with such legendary acts as
Northlane,
Thy Art Is Murder,
Fear Factory (USA),
Bodyjar,
Hands Like Houses and more. The iconic festival will make the ambitious leap to Harts Mill in Port Adelaide on Saturday November 9th – head to
frothandfuryfest.com for tickets and more info.
Left On Seen came out swinging in 2022 with the release of their infectious debut single
‘Life Support’, showcasing their unique brand of rambunctious storytelling and theatrical nonsense. It immediately cemented them as one of Adelaide’s most exciting new bands, and they’ve since shared the stage with beloved acts like
Forever Ends Here,
Those Who Dream, Synge,
Down & Out,
Drastic Park,
Mannequin Death Squad,
Something Something Explosion and
LOSER – among many others.
Comprising seasoned music professionals Ashlea Jaye (Peripheral Noise) on vocals and Will Adam (Down With The Ship, Doc Oc!) on lead guitar, Left On Seen are a force to be reckoned with.
Rawing In The Pit Media: “In a world where pop punk can seem all the same, Left On Seen boldly stands out as a queer pop punk beacon, pushing the boundaries and injecting a refreshing dose of authenticity into the Australian music scene.”
