Vancouver-based, Australian-born singer-songwriter Meredith Louise released her sophomore EP, Move Slow, on August 30.
Louise released two singles, Stay Open and Take Our Time in the lead up to the release, describing the new body of work as a shift from her first release and explains: “I’ve been leveling up as a musician and writer, and really starting to find my sound. Leaning more into being vulnerable and honest through my music, I’m wanting to share more of who I am with listeners, and highlight all of what influences me as a writer, musician and human. I feel like this EP really showcases that.”
Co-produced with Vancouver producer Darren Lee, the pair tracked the five-song extended play out of Lee’s home studio in East Vancouver, with some of the city’s finest session musicians. A nod to 70s soul and funk records, Move Slow was mostly recorded live off the floor with organic instruments and textures, and encompasses Louise’s trademark sound that weaves jazz and soul alongside intricate colourful arrangements. Featuring a three piece horn section and percussion elements, the EP explores the theme of purposefully slowing down in a world that tries to speed everything up.
Louise explains: “In this era of late stage capitalism, everything seems to be moving at light speed and we’re never given the opportunity to take a breath and find reverence and joy in the small things of the world. It’s such a white, colonial mindset and reinforces the structures that cause anxiety, confusion and disconnection. This body of work pushes back against these pressures placed upon us, and serves as a reminder for me that I need to look up, take a pause, and breathe. Good things take time.”
A strong and powerful follow up to her previous release Mind Frame, this new work showcases Meredith’s trademark sound, colourful arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics that takes the listener on a journey into the human condition. Intrigued by stories and the common threads that weave us together, she writes songs inspired by people, places and landscapes.
