SAMANTHA N MARTIN
AKA: The Bush Tukka Woman
Samantha Martin, widely known as "The Bush Tukka Woman," is an Aboriginal woman from the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Her Aboriginal name is Nyudbi.
HISTORY
Samantha learned the lay of the land, the location of the surrounding rivers, and the seasons straight from her family and the elders as she grew up. Her background fostered an innate interest in and thorough understanding of the nutritive qualities and overall health advantages of the extraordinarily varied array of Australian bush foods. Samantha, who was raised in poverty and hardship, overcame all forms of abuse, prejudice, racism, and stereotyping by forging her own path to success and serving as an inspiration to her people.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN BUSINESS
Tribal Voice connections is a cultural consulting company founded and directed by Samantha Martin. The company strives to educate and raise awareness of the value of cultural relationships. For the past ten years, Samantha has travelled the globe to promote the wisdom and customs of the planet's oldest living society, all the while showcasing the knowledge her ancestors left behind.
Samantha has put a lot of effort into positioning her brand and company to support the global dissemination of cultural knowledge and awareness of Bush Tukka and her diverse and fascinating cultures.
In order to support Indigenous communities in addressing mental and emotional health and wellbeing through bush tukka and self-determination, Samantha works tirelessly as an Indigenous mentor, sharing her experiences and interacting with community groups, schools in remote communities, and Indigenous Health services throughout the Cape York Region, the Kimberley, the Gulf, and the Northern Territory.
Working with the Australian Embassy, Samantha has traversed the globe to highlight the diversity of her Aboriginal cultures in Asia, Europe, and the United States. She has almost ten years of experience working as a guest lecturer on the five-star German cruise ship MS Europa. She has also worked on the Coral Expedition cruise ship, which travels around the northern tip of Australia.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN FILM AS A DIRECTOR/PRODUCER/PRODUCTION MANAGER &
TV PRESENTER
Ms. Martin has a strong desire to impart her expertise on fundamental survival skills, including how to forage, prepare, and cook wild foods. The four-part documentary "My Bush Tukka Adventures with Samantha Martin," which she produced and shown on SBS/NITV from 2006 to the present, is available on YouTube. She is also referred to as the "Bush Tukka Woman."
In order to spread and maintain her cultural knowledge before it is completely gone with the passing of our elders, Samantha has utilised film as a crucial tool. For other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, she believes that film is a fantastic storytelling platform.
As an Indigenous female director and producer, Samantha was given the chance by SBS/NITV in 2013 to produce and direct eighteen stories for the NITV series "Around the Camp Fire."

ACHIEVEMENTS AS AN AUTHOR
Samantha's narrative begins while she was still illiterate in her final years of high school in Perth, but she knew she wanted to write books after falling in love with them.
In 2014, Samantha was contacted by Hardie Grant about writing and her book, "Bush Tukka Guide," was released by Explore Australia. Samantha is passionate about sharing her knowledge of fundamental survival skills, such as how to comprehend our cultural heritage and diversities and how to apply basic survival knowledge of how to identify, hunt, gather, prepare, and cook native bush foods. She has dedicated a significant portion of her life to assisting others in introducing native foods into their kitchens.
ACHIEVEMENTS WITH HER BOOK - BUSH TUKKA GUIDE
In a convenient field guide format, Samantha Martin's best-selling Bush Tukka Guide assists readers in finding more bush foods, recipes, and up-to-date information. All bookshops and online retailers worldwide carry Samantha's modest little book, including Amazon, Book Topia, Angus & Robertson, SBS Bookshop, Dymocks, Goodreads, Charts & Maps Shop, and Hardie Grant, to name a few.
Respected bush tukka woman Samantha Martin discusses her love and understanding of the art form, which was passed down to her from her mother Nancy Martin and First Nations Elders across Australia.
Samantha provides us with comprehensive descriptions of each plant and animal species, along with distribution maps and cautions if any elements of a bush food are hazardous, in three chapters that cover plants, animals, and recipes. This helps us identify bush tukka.
In her book, The Bush Tukka woman teaches readers how to recognise native plants like lemon myrtle leaves and Kakadu plums, as well as the nutritional significance of the foods that Aboriginal people eat, such green ants, magpie geese, and freshwater turtles. Bunya nut pesto, slow-cooked kangaroo with lemon myrtle, and caramelised cluster figs with ice cream are just a few of the delectable recipes it features.
Discover what Aboriginal People have understood and practised for thousands of years—a true celebration with a respectful awareness that bush foods are also medicines, providing a variety of vitamins and minerals to nourish our health and well-being—with the help of the Bush Tukka guide. If you know what you're searching for, bush foods are readily available right here on Country.
